Abstract

This research article investigates the dialectical interplay between tradition and modernity within Nairobi's contemporary built settings, focusing on the adaptation and integration of vernacular architectural heritage. Vernacularism, as a socio-culturally and environmentally responsive architectural paradigm, reflects the symbiotic relationship between communities, local culture, and the macro-climatic context. However, the contemporary trajectory of architectural practice often marginalizes vernacular principles, leading to a potential rupture in the continuity of this significant heritage. A qualitative case-study methodology is employed, utilizing purposive sampling, empirical investigation, and archival analysis to examine the extent of integration between vernacular and contemporary construction techniques, and the associated challenges. Findings reveal that while synergistic integrations produce harmonious built environments, legislative disharmonies and a paucity of expert awareness impede wider adoption. Strategic interventions are therefore proposed to foster vernacular heritage adaptation for integration. The salient aim is to inform policy development and establish a knowledge base for sustainable architectural practices that bridge traditional wisdom and contemporary construction. This article contributes to the discourse on cultural heritage conservation within rapidly evolving urban landscapes, emphasizing the critical role of vernacular architectural heritage adaptation in achieving sustainable built environments.
